We often get weird and wonderful requests for jewellery and often the more unusual the story the more remarkable the final piece. One recent commission that really stood out is our Lobster Ring.
James initially contacted us as he was looking for a bespoke engagement ring to encompass the personality of his girlfriend. The inspiration for the piece was based on an Art-Deco style and to include Lobsters as not only was this was her favourite creature but also as a performance artist, she had created a show that was heavily based on them.
With these types of commissions, it can be difficult to find a starting point and gauge how far the client is willing to go and how adventurous they want to be. However, we knew from the first design consultation that we were going to love working with James.
A key point that we regularly spoke of throughout the design process was to remember that an engagement ring is to be worn everyday so it’s vital to think of the wearers life style demands. Also, when working with a theme it is all about finding a balance to avoid the design looking tacky or a novelty. The aim is to capture the wearers unique identity, through the eyes of their partner.
After closing in on rough ideas for the design it was time for James to choose the most important part, the center diamond. We sourced various options, and he eventually decided on a beautiful Asscher cut Diamond. This stone cut is the epitome of Art-Deco style and a perfect choice for the style we were working too.
With the stone chosen, we could now finalise the design of the lobster being built around the center diamond, cradling it within its claws. The ring was made in 18 carat Rose Gold, to give a luxurious orange, pink tone inspired by the colour of a lobster and we set small black diamonds to give texture. The center diamond was mounted in platinum to intensify the white colour of the stone and to add contrast to the rose gold lobster claws holding it.
James was blown away by the final piece and proposed on the very same day that he collected the ring. A few days later they both came back together and she was over the moon with her Lobster Ring specially created for her. Upon meeting her in a red patterned silk kimono, teamed with red felt hat, we realised how perfect this ring was for her as she absolutely radiated lobster awesomeness!
Needless to say the ring suited her perfectly and we can’t wait to see what their ideas are for the wedding bands!
